Come into My Parlor: Tables by Michael Wilson Designs
If you’re an arachnophobe, please visit our custom table gallery before you look at the pictures below. You can find many other examples of custom made conference, coffee, and wood tables available from the CustomMade family of artisans.
Still here? Cool.
Many things have legs, including furniture. Some things have many legs. We’ve seen examples of pieces by CustomMade artisans who’ve found inspiration for furniture legs from diverse sources, including the natural world. If you have provocative tastes in furniture design or you’re looking for custom tables inspired by the animal world, take a look at the eight-legged creations of furniture maker Michael Wilson of Michael Wilson Designs.
Mr. Wilson’s work has been featured in GQ Magazine, October 2006 (see a slide show of the pieces featured in the magazine), on thestylecurator.com (see a video of his work, including some of the spider pieces in progress), and in the show, Architectonic, at the JF Chen Gallery. His custom work embraces the unique qualities of his materials. He incorporates “the natural idiosyncrasies of the wood, whether it is small knots, irregular grain, or any other imperfection” into his furniture designs.
His spider-inspired tables are stunning incorporations, indeed.
The glass top tarantula dining table has an arachnid base made from ebonized hardwood. Each leg ends in a bronze claw and is positioned to suggest a moving, living thing. The white tarantula coffee table is similar in construction to its dining table cousin but also features a metal sculpture at the table’s body, beneath the glass. This one seems ready to pounce.
The hand-carved walnut tarantula low table invites you to reach towards its tabletop, which can be made from your choice of wood, metal, or glass. Perhaps you can pet this one.
Whether you’re fond of our eight-legged friends or searching for custom tables that will be the center of attention the next time you have guests for dinner, contact Michael Wilson Designs or another CustomMade artisan in your area.
