CustomMade Can Help You Create Rooms Within Rooms
Have a large room or open space that you would like to subdivide into smaller, more intimate settings or conversation areas? Florida-based architect Bud Dietrich has a passion for turning his “clients’ houses into their homes,” and in his article “Architect’s Toolbox: A Room Within a Room” for the home design website Houzz, he takes a look at multiple ways to create enchanting spaces within spaces, whether you’re partitioning a bedroom, living room, bathroom, or the great outdoors itself.
Bud’s article contains many wonderful examples of what you can accomplish with four-poster beds, columns, ceiling height changes and step-ups, and outdoor structures like lattices. Interested in creating rooms within rooms? Have a look at some of the spaces and pieces our CustomMade artisans have created for their clients.
A Room Within a Bedroom
A four-poster bed can be a dramatic centerpiece for any bedroom, and its posts, canopy, and curtains easily create the impression of a separate room or structure. The details and craftsmanship of this four-poster bed by M. J. Milkovits Cabinetmaking would make that impression very deep. The headboard is made from curly maple, the octagonal cherry posts feature birdseye maple inlay, and the canopy is made from bent, laminated cherry. The bed shown here is a queen size, but you can contact Martin Milkovits and commission a king size bed, too.
Columns and Height Variations Create Areas of Distinction
A row of columns can help screen an area from a larger room while still permitting visual and traffic flow between the spaces, and a variation in ceiling height or a step-up can visually and physically herald a new setting. These techniques can be applied not only in a living room but in a bathroom as well. These custom stone columns and panels by Omega Mantles of Stone turn this bathtub into a distinctive oasis. Contact Leo Montagnese and bring stone columns and arches into your home that both divide and beckon.
An Outdoor Room with a View
“A room within a room isn’t just for the inside,” writes Bud. “Some simple lattice screening and greenery makes for a wonderfully intimate and restful way station in the great outdoors.” A restful way station is precisely what would come to mind if you were to pass under this garden trellis by Natural Edge. Just imagine your own trellis made from live edge, sustainably harvested red cedar and osage timbers covered in roses, grapes, wisteria, or whatever your favorite creeping vines may be. Get in touch with David Robinson and create a room that’s green from top to bottom.
