Portlandia says “Put a Bird On It”? Make it a custom bird!
If you’re a fan of the new hit series Portlandia starring Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen, you’ve heard the adage “put a bird on it” a time or two. This refrain was taken from a comedic skit that suggests when a bird is placed on a functional object it heightens that object to art. The pair were mocking the fact that the bird was “becoming shorthand for art”, and perhaps mocking artists as well (all in good fun of course).
Here is a short clip of the Portlandia skit
Is it cool to use bird motifs now? Should we stop using birds? Should we start to add birds? At CustomMade, we have no doubt what is or is not considered art. Whether it’s birds or deer or elephants that inspire us, we shouldn’t let comedic parody obstruct creativity or control artistic vision.
We have no shortage of unique designs influenced by nature. And contrary to what they mock on Portlandia, artists will continue using nature as their muse. This weeks favorite custom finds are the artistic masterpieces that occur when an artist makes that crucial design decision to ”put a bird on it”.
Whatever your dream, whatever item you want to have made, CustomMade has an artisan who can work with you and help you create your custom work of art (with or without a bird on it). Click Get Started now.
