Finesse With a Chainsaw ?!?!

To some, chainsaw carving may sound like a gimmicky parlor trick, a world away from fine art design. Long considered one of woodcraft’s more interesting (and more dangerous) methods, chainsaw carving is a precision technique used to create ornate, custom wood sculpture. This hazardous approach to wood carving produces pieces that are unquestionably fine art.

CustomMade artisan Alex Downs is a talented, classically trained sculptor. He’s created a process combining wheel thrown pottery, lathe turned wood, and chainsaw carving. His expert precision combined with the raw power of the chainsaw allows him to create custom, one-of-a-kind sculpture as well as functional, useful woodwork.

Below are three one-of-a-kind wooden bowls. These are not your traditional wooden salad bowls. These are large custom wall hangings often measuring four feet in diameter. Each bowl is turned on a potter’s wheel while carved with a chainsaw. They can be hung on the wall with a custom metal cleat, or placed on a pedestal, table, or floor depending on the size bowl you have made.
