Custom Dream Project Winner Creates Her Dream Dining Table
In early November, Lizzie Smithson was thrilled to be the winner of our Custom Dream Project Contest. Lizzie loves furniture and dreamed of having a mid-century modern custom dining table that she could gather around with friends and family, enjoy great food and conversation, and eventually become a family heirloom.
After winning the contest, she posted her job on our project board and connected with Bert Rabbe of North Texas Wood Works.
Here’s the story in Bert’s words:
“After Lizzie posted on CustomMade.com for a Vintage Industrial Dining Table, we began an extended dialogue about what might best fit the definition of Industrial and Lizzie’s vision, while staying with her budget. From a broad basket of options, we gradually narrowed it down to an old oak shop table for the top with custom made steel legs and large casters.
Lizzie’s vision was quite specific. I could carefully sand and smooth the top, but all the dings and scratches that could be salvaged were definitely on her want list. Lizzie’s fiancé Isaiah was equally as interested in edges that were as square as possible without being unduly sharp”.
A few years of history were sanded from both the top and bottom of the table. Whenever possible, I gouged out and smoothed the occasional defect and overly distressed spots instead of repairing with fill. I contracted the services of a local welder and powder coating applicator to make the custom legs. The old style casters with a modern edge were obtained from Coolcasters.com. Then it was on to the dyes, stains, and finish coats to bring the table to its new purpose in life.
Congratulations Lizzie! You helped create a beautiful dining table and it looks like you made the perfect choice in North Texas Wood Works.
