Bamboo Options for Custom Cabinets
Choosing bamboo for your custom cabinets doesn’t mean your décor inspirations are limited to Gilligan’s Island reruns. Bamboo is a versatile material that can work in crisp, clean Asian-inspired, modern, and even traditional styles. Bamboo’s strength and natural resistance to swelling at high moisture levels make it a practical choice, too, for kitchens and bathroom cabinetry, and sustainable harvesting can make bamboo a green building option. Take a look at a few examples of the custom made cabinetry our CustomMade artisans have created from bamboo.
Since bamboo is a grass and cannot be milled like a tree, its stalks are sliced into strips that are then laminated together. The resulting boards can either have a “vertical grain,” a surface created with the edges of the strips that looks more like actual wood grain, or a “horizontal grain,” a surface created with the cross-sections of the strips that shows off the bamboo’s traditional knuckle pattern.
This custom bamboo kitchen by Superior Woodcraft, Inc., features vertical grain, custom stained bamboo in a unique, modern kitchen design.
The horizontal grain in this bamboo kitchen by Jim Farris Cabinets helps establish this space’s stylish, contemporary look.

The challenge: a modern master bath remodel in a 19th century Colonial home for a client who wanted a “masculine aesthetic” for the new scheme. The result: this bathroom remodel by Feinmann, Inc., with a custom bamboo vanity and built-in cabinetry complementing the natural stone elements. What else can bamboo do?
