The Process
The Buyer submitted an endearing picture of his pup on a pink raft floating in water for the Maker to work off of. The Maker zoomed in to capture the face of the dog and began sketching the portrait in pencil onto a canvas. To capture the perfect yellow tone the Maker started with a darker, orange color, which she later layered with white to make a lifelike furry yellow. To mimic the shadowing in the photo, the Maker went in with a fine brush with shades of brown and black. Finally, the Maker was able to move to her favorite step – outlining the dog in black permanent marker to transform the portrait from realistic to cartoonish.

Dog portraits are hot, similarly, I recently was commissioned to do one on an old rustic shutter from an old barn, and used the hooks as a dog leash and then soon after on a antique stool.
