It’s officially summertime which means most of us are just itching to get outdoors. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is entertain in our backyard. I’m not talking about a fancy soiree, just an intimate gathering with family and friends, plenty of good food, and lots fun. Today I’m happy to share a few tips to help you make your summer entertaining simple and fun. Here are a few must-haves and must-dos for summer entertaining to help as you plan your next outdoor gathering this season.
The key to entertaining is to always have a few go-to pieces you can reuse time and time again – this is no exception when taking things outdoors. Think about where your guests will be seated and what you’ll be doing. A custom piece like a sturdy outdoor table along with plenty of seating options will not only bring a personal element to your gathering but they will be pieces you can use each time you entertain (not to mention conversation starters).
Some other essentials on my list are a rolling bar cart to easily bring fun drinks in- and outdoors or unique serving trays that still look nice when all the food is gone. Many people prefer to grill in the summer since it’s so easy and a great way to cook without being pulled from the party so make sure you have plenty of grilling supplies stocked up for summer.
By taking your gathering outdoors, you are really eliminating the need for many decorations (a bonus!). Let nature be your backdrop and don’t fuss over décor. Placing a small centerpiece on your outdoor table or setting up a festive beverage station is all you really need to do in order to pull your outdoor space together.
There’s something about summer’s warm and welcoming nature that makes all of us a bit more welcoming ourselves. Because summer’s so happy-go-lucky, guest lists for outdoor gatherings tend to grow beyond what you anticipate. Be prepared with plenty of food to toss on the grill and plenty of drink mixers to stir up something sweet for the unannounced guests that are sure to wander in. Aside from being surrounded by drinks, food, and friends, a must-do in my book is to have music and yard games.
You don’t want your guests sitting around staring at one another do you? Put on some tunes and toss out some yard games that your guests can play at their leisure. A few of my go-to yard games are bean bag toss (commonly known as corn hole or baggo), Yard Dice and Murbles (it’s like Bocce but easier). An added plus is that you won’t feel like you have to entertain guests the entire time.
Entertaining outdoors can be a really simple and fun way to enjoy your summer. Once you have the ambiance locked down you just have to decide what food to serve. Any favorite recipes you want to share? Let me know in the comments section below!
