When looking around for that perfect engagement ring (or even a special pendant or spectacular earrings) the diamond chosen is a pretty critical decision. If you're diving into diamond buying, the Four C’s becomes a buzz phrase to remind you to consider diamond cut, color, clarity and carat size. It can be completely overwhelming, but if the diamond is the selling point of the glitzy engagement ring you’ll want to be sure you're getting the best value. Read on for more information on the Four C's and what to lookout for.
Cut: Often confused with shape, the cut actually determines how much light the diamond ring reflects. If the cut is too shallow or too deep, light will pass right through the diamond giving it a somewhat dull look. If it’s cut correctly, however the diamond will work to deflect light off its own walls and shoot it back out giving off a stunning glimmering light. Although cut and shape are different aspects, shapes do help to add to the glitz of the diamond. Below are some popular shape choices.
Clarity: When a jeweler or Maker describes diamond clarity they ll mention inclusions. Inclusions let you know if other minerals or fractures are present in the diamond. The basic rule of thumb is the fewer inclusions, the more brilliant the diamond and the higher the price tag. As you get higher up the inclusion scale, imperfections can become apparent to the naked eye, but they're not glaring.
