Celebrating BBQ with CustomMade

BBQ and Beer. These two delightful American staples are a favorite way to beat the summer sizzle. The small town of Deer River, Minnesota celebrated both last Saturday at the 3rd Annual Deer River BBQ and Brew Fest. BBQ champions from across the state pulled out all the stops and competed in four delectably different categories: Beef Brisket, Pork, Chicken and this bloggers personal favorite, Ribs. Along with bragging rights, the skilled chefs in each category received prizes for 2nd place, 1st place and one overall Grand Champion. When planning the festivities, Tyler had the seemingly impossible task of finding someone capable of helping him fabricate several different prizes while under a very tight deadline. So he turned to CustomMade and found three very different yet talented makers who helped him bring his ideas to life.

These fabulous CustomMade makers were able to design and craft three distinctly different prizes. For those coming in second place, Woodworking by Erminio crafted four stunning custom cutting boards. The husband and wife team behind Palmer Union Design created four large plaques for the first place winners of each category. Finally, the prize of Grand Champion Grill Master was proudly crafted by MWB Studios, who customized a decorative cutting board for the winner of that honor.

Through CustomMade, Tyler was able to give BBQ champions from the mid-west prizes to proudly display in their kitchen for years to come.

He chose a decretive cutting board for with the competition logo engraved for the lucky second place contestants. Woodworking by Erminio was happily crafted these lovely pieces. The two settled on bamboo for the wood for several reasons, it’s eco-friendly but it’s also lighter, yet harder than most woods. And (although these cutting boards are for decoration) a bamboo cutting board is more hygienic and less likely to dull a chef’s knife than other materials making it a great choice for cutting boards.

After Erminio carefully crafted four bamboo boards, he laid each one under a CNC machine to carve the festival’s logo and the specific category in each.

Those skilled few who displayed their superior BBQ skills (is it the sauce or the meat that makes it so great?!) and come in first place received a lovely plaque designed and crafted by Palmer Union Design.

The impressively detailed plaques, made of corian, were designed with future BBQ competitions in mind. Palmer Union Design has the ability to produce others in different colors for next year’s competition.

The coveted prize, given to the Grand Champion Grill Master was a mountable cutting board with the logo of the completion and the title carved in. MWB Studios crafted this beauty with pear wood from fallen trees due to raging Oklahoma storms. Above is the rendering that MWB Studios put together for Tyler. This treasure is an honor for any BBQ competitor to have hanging in their home.
