Custom Science for 7th Graders

Every so often, a customer comes to CustomMade with a truly challenging project. Something that is so outside the box that even our employees have to think “IS there really someone out there who could actually make this?” But the talented makers on CustomMade never disappoint. One such customer, Carl J., came to CustomMade with an idea for a project that was a year in the making: A Mesmerizing Pendulum Steel Ball Swing Set (see the video above).

It was a unique birthday gift for a 7th grade science teacher. Not only did he need a highly skilled carpenter, but he also needed a maker with an understanding of the physics behind the piece. Enter CustomMade Maker Scott Reuman of Conundrum Designs Inc. With an eclectic background in physics, engineering, and fine art, Scott immediately jumped on this opportunity, knowing that he was the maker for the job. After Scott’s first message, Carl knew he had found a maker with an ideal background and a real understanding of the science behind the kinetic art. Together, the two were able to work on a custom project that would fascinate classes of 7th graders for years to come.

After extensive collaboration, Scott presented Carl with a computer design of what would eventually become the Mesmerizing Pendulum Steel Ball Swing Set.
Design #1
Carl gave Maker Scott artistic freedom when designing the structure. They both wanted it to be an item that when placed in a classroom would delight and enchant the 7th graders to learn more about it. Scott went with an inlay of blue resin waves that would serve to attract inquisitive minds.

Now to add the steal balls. Scott took extra care measuring each one making sure that every single one fell at a very specific, calculated distance from the top.
