Tiger Maple Coffee Table: Rawr!

When customer Halen posted her coffee table project to CustomMade, she knew what was important to her. It wasn’t the specific design of the table as much as it was finding the perfect piece of wood – a live edge piece of Tiger Maple Wood, to be exact. She was drawn in by the natural “stripes” of the wood, which are created naturally during the growth of the tree. (The fibers of the wood become distorted, which produces unique wavy lines perpendicular to the grain known as “flames.”) Usually this type of wood is used to build musical instruments like guitars, but Halen loves the style so much that she wanted to have a entire coffee table.

Zac DiVine of Zac DiVine Carpentry responded to Halen’s request with a bit more information regarding the wood. Halen had initially requested one complete slab, but Zac had a better idea: to best showcase those “stripes” to which Halen was so drawn, he recommended to find a few beautiful slabs of Tiger Maple, then glue and flatten them together so they will have the appearance of one. Halen went with Zac’s recommendation and trusted Zac to take the reigns through the rest of the process. He incorporated the elements that were important to her (the Tiger Maple and the live edge) but he was also able to be the designer as well as the craftsman. Zac’s take of the experience: “It pushed my creative limits and expanded my arsenal of skills.”

Seeing a maker and customer relationship like Zac and Halen’s blossom just bring big ol’ similes to our faces! Just as Zac was thrilled to work with Halen, she was floored by the beauty of the final piece. Through their collaborative efforts, they created a coffee table that was totally one of a kind. The first piece of wood is picked. Through this one pice you can really see the unique striping that Tiger Wood has and see why Halen wanted to use it so much!

The live edge slabs of Tiger Wood are officially delivered and in the shop! The boards put together are much larger than the final size of the coffee table and will be cut down to the correct shape and size. The coffee cup sitting on top is for a size reference, these are big pieces of wood!

Before moving forward with this design, Halen and Zac went back and fourth on potentially adding a drawer to the second layer. Eventually, Halen nixed the drawer idea in favor if a simple veneer shelf.

It's alive! Zac searched high and low for the perfect live edge slab of tiger maple for Halen. The live edge adds a natural and rustic feel to the finished piece.

Zac's next step was to glue the slabs together. They may look like four pieces of wood but once they are flattened and stained, Zac will have transformed four into one complete slab. Notice the live edge runs along the longest side of the coffee table, simply lovely!

It's complete! Finding the right stain can be a challenge, Zac was able to let Halen watch while he mixed the stain to find the absolute perfect color. The choice of using black on the legs really compliments the stain choice.
Final 7
This final image from Zac illustrates the impressive work he did turing four slabs of wood into one while still incorporating the natural live edge on the side. He was also able to showcase the natural stripes of this unique type of wood.
